Reader Question Mr. Davis,
I have a question regarding my 2001 Chevrolet Blazer LS 2dr, 2wd. It has 166,500 approx. miles on it and is very loud when I drive it. I am in college and don’t have a lot of money to spend.
My friend is pretty knowledgeable with mechanics and thinks that the bearings are going bad and might need to be replaced. I also know that my tires are near the end of their life and need to be replaced- could this be the problem, or do you have any other suggestions?
Do the “bearings making a lot of noise because they go bad†make sense? The best way I can describe the sound is a loud (even on the inside) whirring noise that gets louder as I go faster. Thanks in advance for anything you can tell me!
John
Howdy there John,
I would first replace the tires and see what happens. I see/hear LOTS of similar noise complaints and 95% of the time it is due to rough worn out tires. If you cant afford 4 brand new tires at the time, replace the worst two tires…putting the new tires on the front of the vehicle and the older tires to the rear and see if that helps.
You could have a worn out bearing…you definitely have some mileage on them, but rule out the obvious stuff first (worn out tires).
Keep me posted will ya?
Blessings,
Austin Davis
